Tại Sao Viết Kiểu Việt Bị Native Đọc Thấy 'Rambling'?

Mỗi ngôn ngữ có conventions riêng về tổ chức văn bản. Viết tiếng Anh bằng structure tiếng Việt = đúng grammar, sai discourse.

·5 phần

1'Get to the Point' — Giá Trị Văn Hóa, Không Phải Style

Scenario: bạn viết email cho sếp Mỹ.

"Dạo này công ty cũng khó khăn, anh biết rồi đấy, thị trường không ổn định, tôi cũng đã cố gắng nhiều trong quý vừa qua..."

→ Người Mỹ đọc xong: "OK nhưng bạn MUỐN GÌ?"

Main point (xin tăng lương) nằm ở cuối. Người Mỹ muốn biết ngay.

Kaplan (1966): 5 culture patterns

English: linear (thesis → support → conclusion). Vietnamese/Asian: indirect (context → reasoning → main point).

LanguagePattern
EnglishLinear: direct to point
VietnameseIndirect: build context first
ArabicParallel: multiple themes simultaneously
Romance (French/Spanish)Digressive: elaborate around the point with apparent detours

Mô hình Kaplan bị criticized (quá generalize) nhưng core observation valid: conventions khác nhau thật.

"Get to the point" là giá trị văn hóa. Vi phạm = perceived as unclear, unfocused, wasting time.

2Writer-Responsible vs Reader-Responsible

Hai hệ thống

Writer-ResponsibleReader-Responsible
DefaultEnglishVietnamese
RuleWriter phải make everything explicitReader tự suy luận
ConnectorsExplicit: because, however, thereforeImplicit: để reader tự connect

Vietnamese (OK):

"Tôi dậy muộn. Tôi đến trễ."

→ Reader tự hiểu causal relationship.

English (need explicit):

"I overslept, so I was late."

→ Nếu không có "so" → đọc "rời rạc" trong mắt native reader.

Signposting — biển báo trong text

Tiếng Anh signpost mạnh:

  • "This paper will argue that..."
  • "There are three reasons..."
  • "In conclusion..."
  • "First... Second... Finally..."

Người Việt thường thiếu signposting → native reader: "đoạn này đi đâu? kết nối gì?"

Viết tiếng Anh: đừng giả định reader tự suy. Nói rõ mọi thứ = writer-responsible.

3Genre Conventions — Mỗi Loại Text Có Rules Riêng

Email business

Greeting → Purpose → Details → Action Required → Closing

  • Subject line: specific, action-oriented
  • Opening: state purpose immediately
  • Body: details in order of importance
  • Closing: clear next step / deadline

Academic paper (IMRAD)

  • Introduction: problem → gap → your contribution
  • Method: what you did
  • Results: what you found
  • Discussion: what it means

Business report

Executive Summary first — busiest reader chỉ đọc phần này.

Then: Background → Analysis → Recommendations → Appendices

Paragraph structure

Topic sentence first → supporting details → (optional) concluding sentence.

Không có topic sentence = paragraph is "floating" → reader không biết main point là gì.

GenreStructureLưu ý
EmailDirect → details → actionSubject line quan trọng
AcademicIMRADLiterature review mạnh
Business reportSummary firstData + recommendations
News articleInverted pyramid: most important firstLead = 5W in 1 sentence

44 Nguyên Tắc — Áp Dụng = Nghe 'Native' Ngay

4 nguyên tắc discourse

#Nguyên tắcÁp dụng
1Main point firstĐưa ý chính lên đầu, background/context sau
2Explicit connectionsDùng connectors: because, however, therefore, as a result, although
3SignpostingBáo trước cấu trúc: "There are two reasons...", "First... Second..."
4Writer-responsibleĐừng giả định reader tự suy. Nói rõ mọi thứ.

Ví dụ: viết kiểu Việt → fix theo 4 nguyên tắc

Viết kiểu Việt (indirect):

"I wanted to discuss the project timeline. We've had some delays recently. The team faced unexpected challenges. Also, resources were limited. So I think we might need more time."

→ Main point (cần thêm thời gian) nằm ở cuối.

Viết theo 4 nguyên tắc (direct):

"We need to extend the project deadline for two reasons. First, we encountered unexpected technical challenges. Second, resources were limited. Therefore, I'd like to request a two-week extension."

→ Main point đầu. Explicit connector ("Therefore"). Signpost ("for two reasons").

Viết tiếng Anh "giỏi" không chỉ grammar + vocabulary — là discourse convention. 4 nguyên tắc này = writing nghe "native" ngay cả khi grammar chưa hoàn hảo.

Luyện Tập — Practice Framework

Áp dụng ngay với material bạn đang dùng hàng ngày (email, news, podcast) — không cần textbook.

Bước 1: Viết 1 paragraph → check: main point ở đầu hay cuối? Nếu cuối → restructure

Bước 2: Check mọi logical connections → bạn có nói rõ "because/however/therefore" không? Hay đang imply?

Bước 3: Thêm signposting nếu thiếu: "There are three reasons...", "First...", "In conclusion..."

Bước 4: Peer test: cho native speaker đọc → họ tìm main point trong 5 giây không?

Metric đo tiến bộ: native reader không bao giờ hỏi "what's your point?"

5Digital Genres & Turn-Taking — Conventions Của Thời Đại Mới

Slack & Chat — Genre Mới, Rules Mới

Slack/chat là genre riêng biệt — không phải email rút gọn, không phải nói chuyện trực tiếp. Có conventions riêng:

Đặc điểmEmailSlack/Chat
GreetingDear X, / Hi X,Thường bỏ qua hoàn toàn
Sentence lengthĐầy đủ, grammaticalFragment OK: "on it", "got it", "lmk"
Response timeHours acceptableMinutes expected
PunctuationStandard required. (dấu chấm) nghe passive-aggressive
EmojiFormal = avoidToneindicator: 👍 ≠ OK, đôi khi thay hẳn text
ThreadLinearMulti-threaded, parallel conversations

Email tone: "Hi John, I wanted to follow up on the report. Could you please send it by Friday? Thank you."

Slack tone: "hey, report by fri? 🙏"

→ Cùng nội dung, conventions hoàn toàn khác. Dùng nhầm = misread tone.

Turn-Taking — Rules Ngầm Của Hội Thoại Nói

Hội thoại nói không phải mỗi người nói xong thì người kia nói — có cả một hệ thống tín hiệu ngầm:

Tín hiệuÝ nghĩaVí dụ
Turn-yieldingXong lượt nói, nhường cho người khácIntonation xuống cuối, eye contact, trailing off
Turn-holdingĐang giữ lượt, chưa nhường"So um...", "And then...", giọng chưa xuống
Turn-takingLấy lượtNgắt nhẹ khi thấy tín hiệu yield
Back-channelsLắng nghe, không cướp lượt"Mmm", "Right", "I see", "Yeah"

Back-channels tiếng Anh (Mỹ): "uh-huh", "right", "yeah", "I see", "exactly"

Back-channels tiếng Anh (Anh): "quite", "indeed", "yes", "fair enough"

→ Người Việt thường im lặng khi nghe → native speakers nghĩ bạn không lắng nghe hoặc không đồng ý.

Interruption vs Overlap:

Interruption = cướp lượt giữa chừng, người kia chưa xong ý → rude

Overlap = nói cùng lúc ngắn (<1 giây) khi nghe tín hiệu yield → acceptable, thậm chí là engaged listening

Slack không phải email. Back-channels không phải interrupt. Biết conventions mới của mỗi genre = communicate đúng channel.
