1Tại Sao Câu Này Nghe 'Lạ' Dù Đúng Grammar?
Compare hai câu:
"A man walked into the bar. A beer was ordered by the man who had walked into the bar."
→ Weird. Vì new info (beer) đặt đầu, given info (man) đặt cuối.
"A man walked into the bar. The man ordered a beer."
→ Smooth. Given (man) trước, new (beer) cuối.
Given-New Contract
New = thông tin người nghe chưa biết.
Rule: Given trước → New cuối.
"John bought a CAR."
→ Neutral focus ở "car" (cuối câu).
"JOHN bought a car, not Mary."
Weird: "She gave [to the boy who had been waiting outside] [the book]."
→ Heavy prepositional phrase ở giữa → ngắt dòng.
Natural: "She gave the book to the boy who had been waiting outside."
→ Heavy element cuối → smooth.
Đây là lý do extraposition tồn tại: "It is important [that we finish on time]" — subject giả đẩy clause nặng ra sau.
End-focus = thông tin quan trọng cuối. End-weight = element nặng cuối. Cả hai giúp câu nghe tự nhiên.
3Topic-Comment và Focus — Kiểm Soát Điểm Nhấn Trong Câu
Topic-Comment
"As for the budget, [topic] we need to cut 20%." [comment]
→ Tiếng Anh phải restructure: "I don't like this one."
|---|---|---|
| 1. Given first? | Thông tin đã biết đặt đầu câu chưa? | Move given info lên đầu |
| 2. New last? | Thông tin mới đặt cuối câu chưa? | Shift new info → final position |
| 3. Heavy last? | Clause/PP dài nằm ở đâu? | Move heavy element ra cuối |
Ví dụ: vi phạm → fix
Vi phạm: "Heavy rain caused delays at the airport." (new info "rain" đầu)
Fix: "Delays were caused by heavy rain." (given "delays" đầu, new "rain" cuối)
Vi phạm: "She gave to the professor who had supervised her thesis for three years a gift." (heavy PP giữa, light object cuối)
Fix: "She gave a gift to the professor who had supervised her thesis for three years." (light object trước, heavy PP cuối)
Vi phạm information structure = câu đúng grammar mà đọc "chưa smooth". Áp dụng given-new + end-focus = writing cải thiện ngay.
Luyện Tập — Practice Framework
Áp dụng ngay với material bạn đang dùng hàng ngày (email, news, podcast) — không cần textbook.
Bước 1: Viết 1 paragraph → với mỗi câu, underline given info (đầu) và new info (cuối)
Bước 2: Check: new info câu N có thành given info câu N+1 không? Nếu không → flow bị break
Bước 3: Tìm câu nào heavy element ở giữa → move ra cuối
5Cleft Sentences & Inverted Pyramid — Hai Công Cụ Chuyên Nghiệp
Cleft Sentences — Tách Câu Để Tạo Focus
Cleft sentence = tách câu thành 2 phần để làm nổi bật 1 thành phần cụ thể. Có 3 loại chính:
IT-Cleft — "It was ... who/that ..."
Neutral: "John called the police last night."
IT-cleft (focus: who): "It was John who called the police." (không phải ai khác)
IT-cleft (focus: what): "It was the police that John called." (không phải fire dept)
IT-cleft (focus: when): "It was last night that John called." (không phải sáng nay)
WH-Cleft (Pseudo-Cleft) — "What ... is ..."
"What I need is more time." (không phải money hay support)
"What surprised me was his reaction." (nhấn mạnh vào sự ngạc nhiên)
| Loại cleft | Pattern | Focus vào |
|---|---|---|
| IT-cleft | "It was X who/that..." | X = người/thời gian/nơi chốn |
| WH-cleft | "What/Who ... is Y" | Y = điều quan trọng nhất |
| Reverse WH-cleft | "Y is what ..." | Y ở đầu câu, nhấn mạnh |
Inverted Pyramid — Cấu Trúc Báo Chí
Academic writing: build-up → kết luận ở cuối. Journalism: ngược lại — tin quan trọng nhất TRƯỚC.
| Tầng | Nội dung | Ví dụ |
|---|---|---|
| Lead (đầu) | Who/What/When/Where/Why — tin chính | "A fire destroyed downtown library Tuesday, killing one firefighter." |
| Body (giữa) | Chi tiết quan trọng | Tên nạn nhân, số liệu, quote nhân chứng |
| Tail (cuối) | Background ít quan trọng | Lịch sử tòa nhà, thông tin bối cảnh |
Lý do: Readers scan → bỏ đọc giữa chừng. Editors cắt từ đáy lên. Lead phải đứng độc lập và đủ nghĩa.
Lead tốt: "Google laid off 12,000 employees Friday, the largest cut in the company\'s history."
→ 5W trong 1 câu. Đọc xong biết ngay toàn bộ tin chính.
Cleft sentence = focus tool. Inverted pyramid = journalism tool. Cả hai đều ứng dụng end-focus và given-new — information structure đang vận hành.
