- Severity of imposition — request nặng đến đâu?
|---|---|---|
| 1. Bald on-record | "Close the door." | Thẳng, không redress, không thêm gì |
| 2. Positive politeness | "Hey, could you close the door? Thanks!" | Thân mật, tạo in-group feeling |
| 3. Negative politeness | "I'm sorry to bother you, but would you mind closing the door?" | Deference, tôn trọng autonomy |
| 4. Off-record | "It's getting cold in here..." | Hint, không commit, người nghe tự suy |
| 5. Don't do it | (im lặng, tự đóng cửa) | Tránh hoàn toàn FTA |
同事):
"Hey, can you close the window?" ✓ (dùng positive politeness)
Tình huống 2 — High FTA (bạn nhờ sếp):
"I'm really sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if it might be possible for you to take a look at..." ✓ (negative politeness)
- Kind of, sort of, a bit, somewhat
- I think, I guess, I was wondering
- maybe, perhaps, possibly
"I kind of think we should reschedule" = softer, dễ withdraw hơn "We should reschedule."
Modal verbs — politeness scale
|---|---|---|
| Rất lịch sự | could, would | "Could you send the file?" |
| Lịch sự | can, will | "Can you send the file?" |
| Trung lập | should | "Should we reschedule?" |
| Thẳng | (imperative) | "Send the file." |
Present: "I want to ask you something."
Past: "I wanted to ask you something." (lịch sự hơn)
Present: "I wonder if you could help."
Past + progressive: "I was wondering if you could help." (rất lịch sự)
Tag questions —
Tag questions biến statement thành softer request:
- "Close the window, will you?" — hơi thẳng
- "Close the window, can't you?" — thách
- "You could close the window, couldn't you?" — lịch sự, dễ chấp nhận hơn
Apologies before request — xin lỗi trước để giảm face threat
"Sorry to bother you, but could you...?"
"I hate to ask, but would you mind...?"
"Sorry for the short notice, could you...?"
Xin lỗi vì timing không thuận tiện — cho thấy bạn biết đang áp đặt.
Minimizers — làm nhỏ yêu cầu để giảm gánh nặng
Minimizers thu nhỏ request trong mắt người nghe — dù thực tế request vẫn vậy.
"Could you just...?"
"Just" làm request nghe nhỏ hơn, đơn giản hơn — dù bạn đang nhờ việc bình thường.
"If it's not too much trouble..."
"Only if you have time..." / "A quick question..."
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Thẳng nhất | "Close the door." | Imperative — không có gì thêm |
| 2 | "You should close the door." | Should — gợi ý mang tính chỉ đạo |
| 3 | "Can you close the door?" | Can — hỏi khả năng, không hỏi ý muốn |
| 4 | "Could you close the door?" | Could — past tense tạo distance, lịch sự hơn |
| 5 | "Would you mind closing the door?" | Would you mind — hỏi ý muốn, tôn trọng negative face |
| 6 | "Would you mind if I asked you to close the door?"
| 7 — Lịch sự nhất | "I was wondering if you might be able to close the door?" | Past progressive + might + able to — tối đa distance |
Mỗi marker (could, was wondering, hedges) đều là công cụ control mức FTA — biết marker = biết cách calibrate request.
4Tiếng Anh vs Tiếng Việt — 2 Hệ Thống Khác Nhau
Hai hệ thống politeness
| Tiếng Anh | Tiếng Việt | |
|---|---|---|
| Orientation | Negative politeness | Positive politeness |
| Focus | Respect autonomy, minimize imposition | Build in-group solidarity |
| Strategy | Hedges, give options, apologize | Relationship terms, reciprocity, context |
| Example | "I'm sorry to bother you..." | "Anh ơi, em nhờ anh chút..." |
Lý do:
- Tiếng Việt dùng directness để build solidarity (positive politeness)
- Tiếng Anh Mỹ kỳ vọng negative politeness (minimize imposition)
- Kết quả: người Việt → perceived as rude, người Mỹ → perceived as cold
Politeness trong email — 4 tình huống
Request nhỏ (low FTA):
"Could you send me the file when you get a chance?"
Request lớn (high FTA):
"I know you're very busy, and I really appreciate your time. Would it be possible to schedule a longer meeting to discuss..."
Nhắc deadline (delicate):
"Just wanted to gently follow up on the proposal. No rush at all — just wanted to make sure it was on your radar."
Từ chối (high FTA):
"I really appreciate the offer, and I'm genuinely flattered. Unfortunately, I won't be able to take this on given my current commitments."
